I have been painting in oils for forty-two years and have no doubt that creating good art is one of the most challenging of all human activities. In my view truly great works of art are always two minutes from disaster, by this I mean they are always on the very edge, on the border between fundamental truth and oblivion. Despite the differences in their work this applies equally to Rembrandt or Van Gough or De Kooning etc. because the border itself is in permanent flux, moving through history, changing with the human condition. Included on this site is a gallery called “Cave Painting” because, in Neolithic Art, there is a seemingly effortless ability to create the most beautiful images the world is ever likely to see; my own attempts to emulate these great masters are simply an effort to learn, because painting is about learning, about finding a route to a magic place.
